The Unshaping

by Kimberly C. Jones©

Why do we spend so much time trying to fit into a mold— pushing, struggling, squeezing ourselves
into someone else’s vision
of who we should be,
how we should act,
what parts of us are allowed to exist.

The voices come early and often,
whispering their conditions:

If you looked like this,
acted like that,
spoke like her,
wrote like him—
you’d finally be acceptable.
You’d finally be successful.

Because to them,
success isn’t who you are,
but how well you disappear
into their expectations.

All it costs, they say,
is a few small pieces of yourself.
But somehow those are always
the pieces you needed most.

But what happens when
your voice grows louder,
your desires sharpen,
your truth refuses to shrink?

What does it cost to become the person
who no longer conforms to their vision—
but finally returns to your own?

It may cost you nothing,
or it could cost you everything.
The real question is how much
you’re willing to risk
for the chance to truly be you—
and how unstoppable you become
once you choose yourself.
