ECHOES OF A CHILD

by Kimberly C. Jones©

Torn.
Broke.
Shattered.
And still failling.

Pieces of me fall away
every time I meet the darkness in your eyes—
heavy,
hollow,
full of pain.

The light in you,
long since exinguished,
doused by the sea of tears
you’ve cried in silence

“I love him.”
“He loves me.”
“He’s sorry.”

Pieces of me fade
every time your familiar anthem
spills from twisted, swollen lips—
bloody, trembling,
undone by the love he claims to give you.

You need me
to love you,
to hold you,
to save you.

So I give you all of me.
I become your strength,
your comfort,
your anchor.

And now,
I feel the hollow
where I used to be.

A child
trying to be a woman
loses herself
in the wreckage
of someone else’s storm—
and calls it love.
